(TAMPA, FL/AUSTIN, TX) – Every spring, thousands of musicians, music-industry workers and entertainment journalists converge upon Texas’ “live music capital of the world” for a week of networking (read: drinking), reporting (read: sarcastic liveblogging), and amazing shows (read: amazing shows). It makes for a seriously impressive communal experience.
It also makes it just about impossible to get anybody in the industry on the phone that week.
So when rising Austin modern-rock act New Roman Times and hometown venue the Gingerman Pub suggested that the Times’ label, Tampa’s New Granada Records, host a show in the thick of the annual goings-on, the folks at New Granada – home to bands like Candy Bars, King of Spain and The Dark Romantics – decided to pack some of their best and latest acts in the van and head west to enjoy the mayhem in an officially unofficial capacity. Knowing how their friends at Florida-based, nationally distributed free music-and-culture magazine REAX enjoy an opportunity to professionally misbehave, New Granada invited several of the publication’s staff along to split gas, banner and swag expenditures, and a marvelously hoary road-trip cliche was (re)born.
It all culminates in a free party at Gingerman on Saturday afternoon, featuring five superlative acts with whom New Granada, a D.I.Y. imprint founded on mutual respect in what used to be referred to as “free time,” is proud to be associated.
